Roba vecchia, superata, già vista e rivista, fritta e rifritta. A nulla.

English translation

Again and perhaps for the last time we return to the musical "event" of summer 2020: Verdi's Rigoletto in the version modernized by Damiano Michieletto. Success therefore, thanks to a strong advertising hype before, during and after, the presence of the President Mattarella, live broadcast (even if on Rai5's "niche" channel), outdated scenography with car park and carousel on the large stage in the center of the Circus Maximus, screens, distances used as a painful but "necessary" mantra (but then ... why? ), important cast with equally important director.

From a strictly media point of view, and as regards communication, the staff that promotes the successes of Damiano Michieletto can be more than satisfied. The operation was successful. It 's true, there are no longer the critics of the past and the only "blessing" by Corrado Augias is a little bit to be able to ring the bells, but the announced triumph then materialized in the headlines of the various newspapers and news programs. . In the face of many agitated thuribles, even disproportionately, we notice another classic: the avalanche of odi et amo on the web. With a prevalence, it seems to me quite evident, of detractors who are relentless using concepts that obtain the exact opposite of what they aim for: that of endorsing the operation performed by the Venetian director. Read repeated phrases like "Poor Verdi", "Verdi rolls in the grave", "What Verdi would have said", "What times!" (the more learned "Mala tempora"), or "The Opera is dead", in my opinion they end up justifying the operation Rigomichieletto and even to enhance it, more than a falsely positive review.

Meanwhile, who can determine what Verdi wanted and what would he say, if not by evoking it through a medium in front of a three-legged table? Nobody, yet of these phrases every group that speaks of Opera is literally invaded. One could even hypothesize a Verdi, on the contrary, perfectly in tune with the modernist approach desired by the director, precisely to meet the needs of a younger audience, why not? After all, who cares in 2020 to see the hunchback with the multicolored cap and the Gonzaga court in tights? Just to some intransigent nostalgic, to some Taliban veterans of the old loggias ... and then, very important: it is not chic!

Yes, because fashions and trends impose on the so-called "intelligentsia" an attitude totally far from the trappings and dust of the "Provincial Rigolettacci", but what joking? Still with period costumes ??? Old stuff, outdated, already seen and revised, fried and refracted. Verdi and Piave have foreseen this, where do we put the booklet? But guys: the booklet no longer matters today. It is purely indicative, pretentious, even misleading. Who says more "E 'dessa, my beloved"? But not even in Baci Perugina. If we add to this the crass and rampant ignorance of an Italic population almost totally devoid of the most common notions of history, what can a reenactment of sixteenth-century Mantua and one of the courts of which all of Europe spoke about in the Renaissance period? To nothing. It would be like showing Egyptian hieroglyphics to a hamster, hoping that the cute animal will have some interest.

Obviously, in such a situation, the only way to approach the public, whatever it is, and keep it fixed in front of the screen, for more than 10 minutes in a row, is to offer them what they expect, what they see every day: modern clothes from Coppola's films or the award-winning Joker, the slut with fishnet stockings, sequined guild with a gun, the tenor between Elvis and John Travolta. Just put machines, a carousel, the usual caravan (which we now see everywhere, in every work) and mega screens, to make some cinema (which never hurts, in a visual and television society like this). In my opinion it is a forced choice. Try to imagine a palace of the Duke made of blatantly fake columns, painted scenes that the wind moves like sails, Rigoletto with the largest hump of his body, Gilda dressed as a confirmation, Maddalena da Carmen, the tenor with the legs that emerge from a heavy dress 15 kilos… did you want this?

The problem for me, I repeat, is another. Music and technical realization.

Verdi's Music is not the soundtrack of a film but a thoughtful, painful, demanding melodramatic track. I'm not doing an analysis of this extraordinary composition here, revolutionary for its time, but in Rigoletto there is a compositional nobility, an elevation, a search for expressive color that fear very few comparisons. Verdi did not think of the supposed or alleged "genius" of future directors, but never, unconsciously, of his own infinite genius. Verdi did not compose a masterpiece, he made himself a masterpiece: as the great ones know how to do, going beyond the act. The zen maxim of acting without having to act. Now, in the operation of the Rigomichieletto, the music clashed violently, in my opinion, against the proposed images, but not because the direction was "modern", but because in too many places it was technically poorly realized. In this Davide Livermore, for example, has a much more solid technique and ability to manage the film medium, as he has shown above all in Attila and Tosca alla Scala. A few days of rehearsals with the good cameramen? Probably. Little habit with the television medium, imperfect synchrony, perhaps a little in a hurry but above all, I insist, Verdi's music, which is very different from that of Rossini, where Michieletto found himself much more at ease (I refer to the Viaggio a Reims of Rossini in Rome Opera House, show in my opinion very successful).
